Hello,
I'm
Sungmin

I’m interested in how technologies, especially AI, shape people’s everyday lives and social interactions. I draw on qualitative and participatory approaches to understand how people experience technology. I aim to use these insights to inform the design of human-centered technologies.

I am optimistic about the possibilities technology opens up, and I want to help shape its future responsibly. I believe advances in technology should go hand in hand with caring for people: protecting their well-being, respecting their ability to make their own choices, and fostering meaningful connections between people. I’m particularly curious about what this means for young people and future generations.

I recently worked as a research intern at the                                                            at KAIST, under the supervision of

online relationships

Much of our social life unfolds online. Yet the spaces where we connect don’t always make room for the complexities and nuances of human relationships. How do we navigate these dynamics online, and how might technology better support the ways we relate to each other?

participatory AI

Generative AI is finding its way into nearly every corner of our lives, from writing emails to talking through a bad day. It can make our lives easier, but also affect what we trust and how we make decisions, while reflecting some perspectives more than others. How can we better understand its possibilities and risks, and make sure we all have a say in shaping the AI we live with?

design methods

Participatory design is rooted in the belief that people affected by design decisions should have a say in them. Playful activities can spark conversations about people’s ideas and values, while bringing people together across distances and cultures can open up new ways of designing together. How can we keep creating space for meaningful participation as we work with different people in different settings?

human-centered design

Technology is increasingly woven into how people work. Looking closely at their everyday practices and listening to what they find challenging can show where technology could make things easier. How can technology fit the realities of people’s work?
